Zodiac

I don't usually watch true crime dramas. I actually don't watch movies to relive the past or to find out the truth. My normal reason for watching a movie is to escape. So, watching Zodiac was definitely a departure from the norm for me...

Zodiac is taken from the actual case files from the Zodiac case in the 60's and 70's. The killer was never caught, but the police (or rather one detective) never actually gave up. Two of the three jurisdictions involved still have open casefiles on it.

It shows the struggle to solve a case that grows increasingly colder. It also showcases a good performance by Jake Gyllenhall as a cartoonist who becomes obsessed with the unsolved case. I liked Robert Downey, Jr. as the crime reporter who is slowly spiralling into alcoholism. It was a poignant role for him. The detective is played by Mark Ruffalo and he portrays a flawed, but very interesting law enforcement official.

All in all, the movie was a bit disjointed at times, and it skipped time a bit. But it was presented well.

My rating is I WANT 0 HOURS back. It was a good movie.

Next up, I'm not sure...maybe Ghostrider or Georgia Rules. Those are the two that are being sent to me.

1408

Today, you're getting a 2-fer...Two movie reviews in one day....

It's the day after Thanksgiving, I'm home alone (well, no other people), so I decided to try and catch up on my movies.

And so, I watched 1408, starring John Cusack. Again, this movie was recommended to me by friends so I was a bit leery of it. It's based on a novel by Stephen King and I usually enjoy his books, so I decided to try it.

The story is about a writer who travels around the country staying in "haunted" hotels and awarding them skulls for shivers. He received a postcard from a New York Hotel saying to NOT stay in Room 1408. So, of course, he heads straight for New York and that room.

Plot twists galore, a bit of violence (not too much). This is a very good psychological thriller/horror movie. You really don't know where it's going to end and I was pleasantly surprised by where the movie stopped...well, I don't know if "pleasantly" is the right word, but I was DEFINITELY surprised.

My rating: I WANT 0 HOURS BACK...definitely a must-see.

Next up, Zodiac (another friend recommendation)

300

Everyone told me that I would love, love, love 300 starring Gerard Butler.

Well, everyone was wrong. I didn't love it, didn't even like it. Yes, I love Gerard Butler and his butt...but this movie didn't hold my interest for even a few minutes. I tried. I actually watched about an hour of this movie, but couldn't force myself to watch anymore.

The actual story is about Spartans fighting against Xerxes, 300 men against an entire army. That's about all I can tell you about the story.

The cinematography was highly stylized, like a graphic novel. It was quite reminiscent, for me, of Sin City (which I liked). But I just couldn't quite get involved.

So, I really have no rating for this movie. (Actually, I want my hour back, but that's not a rating option...LOL) And that disappoints me...I was really hoping to have some great shots of Gerard's Butt :(
