Well, I am very disappointed in this movie. I love pirate movies, I really love Angus MacFadyen, and this movie had both.
"Blackbeard" was originally a made-for-tv Hallmark Channel Movie. I meant to watch it when it was actually broadcast, but forgot. That should have told me something. This movie has to rank up there with the worst movies of all time.
The plot is simple, Blackbeard, whose real name was Edward Teach, is a scurrilous pirate (as most pirates probably were) who takes over his ship during a battle with a French Slave Ship. As portrayed in this movie, he is a drunken, vindictive, hot-tempered, murderous rogue. And throughout the movie, he is seeking the lost treasure of Captain Kidd.
The protagonist in this story is a British Navy Leftenant, who has been charged with infiltrating Blackbeard's crew and obtaining information. He discovers that the governor of New Providence (played badly by Richard Chamberlin) is in league with the pirates, along with the colony's magistrate. He also falls in love with the Governor's adopted daughter (a sub-plot is the Governor wanting her money).
The acting in this movie was so bad, I really couldn't concentrate on the action. Angus MacFadyen's dialogue was so garbled that I really had to strain to listen to it.
All in all, I WANT MY 2(+) HOURS BACK. Do not watch this movie!
Next up..."300"...I'm seriously looking forward to Gerard Butler's Butt in this one!

Disturbia
OK...I admit it. I had no clue what this movie was about and didn't bother to research it prior to watching it. And that might be a good thing.
"Disturbia" sounds like it would be a slasher flick, and I guess a case could be made that it is, but I prefer to call it a psychological thriller. It is billed as a modern telling of Alfred Hitchcock's classic, "Rear Window" and I think it lives up to its heritage.
Shia LeBoeuf tackles the Jimmy Stewart role, although in this tale, he's a modern troubled teen who is on house arrest, complete with a monitoring ankle bracelet. He has two sidekicks, updated to be his high school buddy and the new (hot) girl next door. The plot follows the Hitchcock movie with updates in technology. There isn't a lot of graphic blood or sex, which could be why it only scored a PG-13 rating. Like Mr. Hitchcock's original, a lot is left to your imagination.
David Morse, who I like a lot, plays the bad guy with chilling accuracy. As much as I like Mr. Morse, he plays a creep really, really well...makes you wonder...
Even though I knew what was going to happen for the most part, this movie still had me alternately chuckling at the boys' antics and sitting on the edge of my seat.
All in all, I want 0 Hours back...this was a good movie and I'd definitely recommend it.

I know I'm behind on my movies
OK...I've fallen a bit behind in the movie department. That's because I'm trying to stay caught up on my TV shows. So, this weekend, I promise, I'll watch and review all the movies I currently have...
And they are:
Disturbia
300
Blackbeard (this was a Hallmark Channel original with Angus MacFadyen and I love him)
Besides, no one reads this but me. Or at least, I rarely get comments...:(
Someone out there, let me know that you care...

The Last Sin Eater
My mom recommended this movie to me. She said it was odd, but she thought I'd like it.
She was right (as she so often is). "The Last Sin Eater" was produced by Fox Faith. This is a division of Fox Studios that I didn't even know existed. Apparently they produce Faith-based movies. And judging by this one, they are unusual and good.
"The Last Sin Eater" deals with a small Welsh Appalachian community in the 1800's. The mountains prior to the 1800's were extremely isolated and settlers incorporated a lot of the beliefs they brought with them from the Old Country.
In this case, whenever someone died, the Last Sin Eater was summoned by the Passing Bell. During the funeral, held at night, he would come and give absolution to the dead person by symbolically eating his sins (bread and wine...sound familiar?). The Sin Eater was originally chosen by the menfolk of the community by lot.
The movie centers around a young girl who wants her sins eaten so she can live in peace. All throughout the movie, it is implied that she was responsible for some great tragedy and it haunted her throughout. She has a friend from a neighboring farm, whose father, played by Stuart Finley-McClellan is the Chief of the settlements and a horrid man to boot.
Louise Fletcher plays an old woman, the last one remaining from the original adult settlers. The kids turn to her for advice on finding the Last Sin Eater. It was an interesting role.
With many twists and turns and a good dose of catechism, "The Last Sin Eater" is something I recommend for nearly everyone. But remember, it is a Faith-based movie, so if that's not to your taste, then avoid it.
All in all, I want 0 hours back. It was well worth my time.
Next up, if I can summon the courage, is "Disturbia".

CSA: Confederate States of America
I had been wanting to see this movie for a while. The trailer on iTunes was thought-provoking. And I am very interested in alternative history.
But I have to admit, this movie did NOT live up to its trailer.
It's an independent film, from Britain. It is a mockumentary supposedly produced by the BBC. The premise is the South won the War of Northern Aggression and slavery is still allowed by law. Very slight humor, with mock commercials advertising items like "The Shackle" and "SNN - The Slave Shopping Network" fell flat. But the history clips and the interviews were somewhat realistic.
I think the filmmaker was quite brave, in this day and age, to make this film. It was done with tongue firmly in cheek and he got away with it, without cries of racism and discrimination.
I guess I just think it could have been better.
All in all, well, I want my 2 hours back. (Or at least 1 hour back, I fell asleep during the bit on reconstruction)

Oops
I made a mistake...the next three movies are:
Disturbia
CSA: Confederate States of America
The Last Sineater
Sorry about that.
Anyway, I should have them in my possession by the weekend. If I go to the lake, then I'll be able to watch them and have a review up on Monday.

New Movies On The Way
So, since there are NO movies on my premium movie channels that I want to watch, I signed up for NetFlix again. I belonged to this service way back when it first started, so I know it's good.
My first three movies are:
Disturbia
CSA: Confederate States of America
1408
These were requested, so I'll review them as soon as I watch them!
On the side, I started to watch "The Prestige" but got bored and turned it off. Didn't feel like wasting my time yesterday.
Again, keep reading and suggesting...But remember, I don't really like Action Movies (ie Die Hard) or Anime. I handle some thrillers/slashers, but not too many. Personally, I like nice light fluffy movies...But I'm game to watch other genres.
Thanks for reading!
